When you first sign up for Twitter, chances are you don’t get it. “Isn’t it just status updates?” At first glance, and to some users, yes. More importantly though, no. Use it however you will, but Twitter is best summed up with its tagline: “What’s happening?” A much better tagline might be “What’s happening now?” (Don’t get all George Carlin on me, I realize it’s the same thing but the now lends a sense of immediacy to the reader.)
Twitter can be a news source, a means for announcing contests, a promotional tool for your organization or blog, a means of communicating positive (or negative) messages, and I guess, a status update tool. Truth be told, I use it mostly for the news. I like to know as much about things as soon as they develop. A quick line about the topic and a short link from my Twitter feed sends me somewhere I’ve never been before. Twitter is great. It’s even nice as a quick reminder that the worst show on earth that you enjoy watching is on tonight at 8pm EST can pop up in your feed on your more hectic days and remind you that later you’ll have a chance to wind down. Another reason I love Twitter is for the comedy writers. Funny people have the best tweets, and if you don’t believe me, you need to follow … well, whomever you find funny.
My tweets are pretty much useless, but they’re observations, thoughts. I’d rather have observations and thoughts than not. If no one wants to read them, the beauty of Twitter is that you can scroll right past me (or unfollow me) if I become irrelevant. Another nice thing is that spambots are normally found out and their accounts deleted in record time.
Anyway, that’s my take on Twitter. A more professional blogger might say something like this, though.
