I've been writing since I was in kindergarten where I Crayola-markered an epic tale of a tiger and a balloon on a stack of lined papers folded into a booklet and stapled along the edge (carefully, and by my teacher). I love DIY, sewing, folksy music, animals and getting out to look at and listen to nature.

New Puppy

Hello folks. I know I’ve been neglecting you something fierce lately. I’m sorry! I love you! Yesterday was a big day. Casey turned 2; it was Valentine’s Day, so I got some beautiful flowers and to spend a wonderful day with a Miklos; and last but not least, we got a new puppy. Originally, we hadn’t planned on getting another dog until Casey kicks it years from now, which to us meant never again, because she is going to live to be 200, so we’ll be … Continue reading

Casey Loves this Record Player

The record player works! We tested it out last night with an old record Miklos’s parents loaned us. When Casey heard the music, she immediately ran upstairs. She came back down a few seconds later with her dead-duck toy and started squeaking away, seemingly to the tune of whichever song was playing. You know, we had our [many] issues at first, but I don’t think I’ve ever known a funnier dog than this one. Share the post “Casey Loves this Record Player” FacebookXShare… Continue reading

Vintage Finds, AKA Old Crap

A little late on this one, but here is some of the stuff we found the other day. You’ll be pleased to know I spend an afternoon cleaning and sanitizing all these things, so the record player no longer looks like a dirty heap of garbage, and the dresser looks slightly better. A tip about cleaning with vinegar + water solution: It’s great because there are no chemicals, but whatever it reacted with (my guess is decades of cigarette smoke) sent me into intermittent coughing … Continue reading

Vintage Score

The other night we were driving to meet up with someone when we spotted a curb full of tossed-aside furniture, books, and framed items.  I’m not normally the type to yell “STOP THE CAR” but I did this time (or some variation of it), and I’m glad. We ended up with: An old dresser An old nightstand (these two will be DIY projects on here come springtime) A giant, framed original landscape oil painting signed “Eldon” Smaller framed painting Framed print of a native girl … Continue reading

Quick Vegetarian Chickpea Curry for Lunch!

Chickpeas, eh?   Garbanzos, you say?  Someone’s on a health kick in this house (hint: it’s not me or any of the pets) so we bought the kind of groceries we normally wouldn’t.  As a result, it’s new recipe time!  I documented the process to whet your appetite for this yummy curried treat!  You could call it vegetarian too, if you’re into that. This recipe yields 2 servings and takes about 20 minutes   You’ll need: – Olive oil (2-3 tbsp) – Half of one large … Continue reading

Free & Easy Cat Hammock Bed DIY

Cats love to sleep.  One common bed you’ve probably seen at SPCAs and cat rescues is the cat hammock.  When I saw this cat hammock on Pinterest today, I thought “what a great idea for a cat hammock at home.” We had tried putting them in Casey’s old crate before, but for some reason the cats didn’t like the idea of walking into a metal cage.  Maybe I could’ve thought that one through better. So I thought, good idea!  A cozy option they’ll enjoy without … Continue reading

Building a Garbage Shed for Less Than $100 Using Scrap Wood

About a month ago, Miklos got sick of the tiny width of our driveway.  He went hog-wild and tore down the fence between our driveway and our neighbour’s house.  He used that for a project and then had a bunch of scrap wood left over. On the same rampage, he took our old metal garbage shed to the scrapyard.  The thing was lousy and made a cringe-worthy metal-on-metal scraping sound when you opened its doors, so no harm done except for one problem: Every windy … Continue reading
