Western Catalpa Tree, Thou Art Mine Enemy

First-time home-owners get messed around a lot. It’s due to a naivety we have and a natural trust in the previous home-owners that has not yet been shattered. Of course no one would ever sell a house that sucks! Well, for the most part, regarding the house itself, we lucked out on trusting the previous owner. We haven’t had so many house problems (barring the near-flood and the subsequent destruction of our basement’s brand new carpet), but we’ve had a lot of yard issues. In… Continue reading

Cat or Magpie? — Our Mixi, the Cat Burglar

Miklos was out for a bike ride in the woods when he happened upon two men playing with a little tortoiseshell kitten. They jokingly asked him, “You want a cat?” They didn’t know who they were dealing with obviously, because Miklos, being the kind-hearted guy he always has been, didn’t think it would be fair to leave a kitten in the woods just before a big thunderstorm. Sure enough, that cat came into our lives and was named Mixi. Soon, I would find kitty jingle… Continue reading

Dog Tummy Rumbling

This morning is a tired one. Junior was trying to climb up the side of the bed, which was strange and somewhat irritating, untilĀ MiklosĀ discovered what might have been the problem. The puppy’s tummy was growling like mad, loud enough we could hear it from across a room. We think it scared him a little. I suffer the same affliction sometimes when I’m not even hungry, though it’s easier for me to climb into our tall bed. Ignoring the scarier answers found on Google (I know),… Continue reading

Look Who I Found in the Cat Bed…

While I was cleaning today, somebody snuck into the DIY cat bed I wrote about a while ago. We kind of love this guy. Now if only he’d stop crying and growling all night when we crate him. He slept uncrated last night on a pillow beside Casey. I’m OK with it, he didn’t run around or anything all night, and he was quiet. I don’t want him to affiliate the crate only with us leaving him, however, because I’m pretty sure he’ll always hate… Continue reading

New Puppy Pictures!

I promised them, and I almost never break a promise made on my blog. Ā Here they are: Cute pictures of our new puppy, Junior. So, a bit about our new German boxer puppy: We got him at 8 weeks old He came from a litter of 7 He’s got 4 paws He has 1 natural tail (not docked) and 2 natural ears [and we like him that way! In Germany, they don’t dock ’em anymore… I won’t start a debate, because really it’s the internet]… Continue reading

New Puppy

Hello folks. I know I’ve been neglecting you something fierce lately. I’m sorry! I love you! Yesterday was a big day.Ā Casey turned 2; it was Valentine’s Day, so I got some beautiful flowers and to spend a wonderful day with a Miklos; and last but not least, we got a new puppy. Originally, we hadn’t planned on getting another dog until Casey kicks it years from now, which to us meant never again, because she is going to live to be 200, so we’ll be… Continue reading

Casey Loves this Record Player

The record player works! We tested it out last night with an old record Miklos’s parents loaned us. When Casey heard the music, she immediately ran upstairs. She came back down a few seconds later with her dead-duck toy and started squeaking away, seemingly to the tune of whichever song was playing. You know, we had our [many] issues at first, but I don’t think I’ve ever known a funnier dog than this one. Vintage Finds, AKA Old Crap

A little late on this one, but here is some of the stuff we found the other day. You’ll be pleased to know I spend an afternoon cleaning and sanitizing all these things, so the record player no longer looks like a dirty heap of garbage, and the dresser looks slightly better. A tip about cleaning with vinegar + water solution: It’s great because there are no chemicals, but whatever it reacted with (my guess is decades of cigarette smoke) sent me into intermittent coughing… Continue reading

Vintage Score

The other night we were driving to meet up with someone when we spotted a curb full of tossed-aside furniture, books, and framed items. Ā I’m not normally the type to yell “STOP THE CAR” but I did this time (or some variation of it), and I’m glad. We ended up with: An old dresser An old nightstand (these two will be DIY projects on here come springtime) A giant, framed original landscape oil painting signed “Eldon” Smaller framed painting Framed print of a native girl… Continue reading
