DIY: How to Make a Beautiful Pallet Headboard for Under $30

upcycled pallet project

Well, I recruited the husband for yet another DIY. We’ve had our beautiful headboard for a week now, and I’m in love. (With husband, yes, but also — the resulting headboard.) Money-saving tip: Someone you know is going to have a spare everything when it comes to tools and supplies. Ask around. You will save so much money just by using things people weren’t using at the moment. They’ll probably be happy to let you use their stuff, too. Between Miklos’s dad, his brother, and … Continue reading

DIY: From Old Dresser to Pretty Vintage Bench

Holy cow! Remember when I said we were going to do a DIY using an old dresser we found on the side of the road? No? Me neither, almost. Except that it’s been in the basement all summer long (oops), staring and waiting for us to hop to it. Hey, we got married this year. As it turns out, that kept us busy this spring. Well, this past weekend we got to it. And as you can imagine from the blog title, we didn’t just … Continue reading

Dragonfly Cannibalism

I’ve posted about this before, but I just felt like bringing it up again. This happened a few years ago at my family’s cottage: The guy on the bottom is the living dragonfly. This unlucky specimen is the head of the guy on top, whose mouth continued to move the whole time. Yet another thing I had never known could happen (both the cannibalism and the disembodied head moving for an hour or two afterward), discovered up north. Have you ever seen something like this? … Continue reading

July’s Done, Nobody’s Impressed

I can’t believe how fast this year is flying by. [Side note: There is an undeniable correlation between how old a person is and how often they say that.] Lessons learned so far this summer: Whenever I want to water the lawn, I remember it’s supposed to rain that night. It usually does not end up raining, but I’ve saved us some money. Bird feeders attract much more than just birds. People still love old lenses for SLR cameras from the ’70s. We need to … Continue reading

Animal Update

It was Rico’s estimated birthday a few short days ago. That’s right. My cat is 9 years old. This cat has been with me through thick and thin, so I decided to make a toy out of a TP roll for him, which Junior later ate. Mixi had to go to the vet last week after we began to notice her itching and licking her fur like crazy and developing scabs which turned into sores. A few shots later and she’s doing well, though she … Continue reading

Pretty Night for a Drive

Decided to drop my phone in the toilet tonight (I think it still works, but I haven’t checked again). Here’s a picture I took on our drive down the Niagara Parkway, with Miklos’s Samsung Galaxy S4, which is the same phone as mine except black and un-toileted. When I yanked the phone out of the (clean) toilet water, I instinctively tapped the “On” button to see if it worked. The display came up and when I swiped over it, it worked. I probably should not … Continue reading

It’s Time to Start

My birthday was yesterday. A lot of people don’t enjoy birthdays, but I say they are depraved souls in need of a talking-to. I say this mostly because I want people to comment, though. Birthdays are, in a way, like New Years. You remember that people love you, and you try to make goals for yourself, or you decree that there will be no new goal-making in your life in an attempt to be different from everyone else, except that there are always plenty of … Continue reading

Western Catalpa Tree, Thou Art Mine Enemy

First-time home-owners get messed around a lot. It’s due to a naivety we have and a natural trust in the previous home-owners that has not yet been shattered. Of course no one would ever sell a house that sucks! Well, for the most part, regarding the house itself, we lucked out on trusting the previous owner. We haven’t had so many house problems (barring the near-flood and the subsequent destruction of our basement’s brand new carpet), but we’ve had a lot of yard issues. In … Continue reading

Cat or Magpie? — Our Mixi, the Cat Burglar

Miklos was out for a bike ride in the woods when he happened upon two men playing with a little tortoiseshell kitten. They jokingly asked him, “You want a cat?” They didn’t know who they were dealing with obviously, because Miklos, being the kind-hearted guy he always has been, didn’t think it would be fair to leave a kitten in the woods just before a big thunderstorm. Sure enough, that cat came into our lives and was named Mixi. Soon, I would find kitty jingle … Continue reading
