DIY: Upcycle regular jeans into skinny jeans!

Upcycle old jeans into skinny jeans

If you have access to a sewing machine, you can turn some spent old jeans into skinnies. I mean, it’ll probably turn out better if you have some sewing experience, but given that I did this as one of my second or third sewing experiments ever, I’m proof positive that it can be done. Background: I don’t mind jeans with a wider leg, but in the dead of winter, I love to wear my boots. Wider jeans + boots just don’t work together very well. … Continue reading

Sew Interesting

Yep, I’m hoping to move right along into the year 1818 and grab me up a sewing machine next weekend. Why? Have you heard of maternity clothes? They’re hundreds of dollars if I want to wear more than a couple of outfits for the next 6 months. Have you heard of my closet? It’s full of jeans and tanks I don’t wear anymore due to maternity fatness and general lack of interest. Yes, I figure with a little effort, I can put together some good … Continue reading

Best Soup for Fall: Homemade Cream of Broccoli (& Everything Else!)

I enjoy good homemade soup any time of year. I’m lucky enough to have in-laws who love to cook family lunch every Sunday, and most everyone who’s tried it agrees, their chicken soup is top notch. Come fall, I like to cook and enjoy my own soup-er hearty meals. Who doesn’t? If I only had an enormous pot (what’s a witch without a cauldron?), I could make a giant batch and freeze enough to have it once a week without all the choppy-choppy. But the … Continue reading

DIY: How to Make a Beautiful Pallet Headboard for Under $30

upcycled pallet project

Well, I recruited the husband for yet another DIY. We’ve had our beautiful headboard for a week now, and I’m in love. (With husband, yes, but also — the resulting headboard.) Money-saving tip: Someone you know is going to have a spare everything when it comes to tools and supplies. Ask around. You will save so much money just by using things people weren’t using at the moment. They’ll probably be happy to let you use their stuff, too. Between Miklos’s dad, his brother, and … Continue reading

DIY: From Old Dresser to Pretty Vintage Bench

Holy cow! Remember when I said we were going to do a DIY using an old dresser we found on the side of the road? No? Me neither, almost. Except that it’s been in the basement all summer long (oops), staring and waiting for us to hop to it. Hey, we got married this year. As it turns out, that kept us busy this spring. Well, this past weekend we got to it. And as you can imagine from the blog title, we didn’t just … Continue reading

Bears in a Tree

Here are the bears we saw cooling off in a tree on a very hot day a few weeks ago near Grundy Lake. Of course, the first time I forgot my camera at the cottage before a boat ride was the first time I ever saw a baby bear peeking out of the bushes along the lake. Lesson learned. NEVER. LEAVE. CAMERA.   Share the post “Bears in a Tree” FacebookXShare… Continue reading

Pretty Night for a Drive

Decided to drop my phone in the toilet tonight (I think it still works, but I haven’t checked again). Here’s a picture I took on our drive down the Niagara Parkway, with Miklos’s Samsung Galaxy S4, which is the same phone as mine except black and un-toileted. When I yanked the phone out of the (clean) toilet water, I instinctively tapped the “On” button to see if it worked. The display came up and when I swiped over it, it worked. I probably should not … Continue reading

The Third Eye Initiative

I’m as proud as an American parent whose son just won his first baseball game. My friend’s book has been doing very well since its long-awaited launch last week. Now you know what I’ve been talking about. If you haven’t picked up this bestselling e-book for Kindle yet and you’re in Canada, you can find The Third Eye Initiative here. If you’re in the USA or outside, it’s here. Share the post “The Third Eye Initiative” FacebookXShare… Continue reading

New Book: The Third Eye Initiative by J.J. Newman

As someone who always plans to write something incredible and never quite gets around to it despite a shameful amount of free time, it makes me proud to say that a friend of mine has spent a long time writing his book and released it on Amazon yesterday. You can find his book for just $2.99 CAD here or by clicking on the link above. Likewise, if you’re in the States, it’s $2.95 here.
